The Trustees created the Putnam Conservation Institute (PCI) in 2003 to increase the capacity of the conservation community to protect, care for, and interpret the natural and cultural resources of Massachusetts. As a program of The Trustees of Reservations, PCI helps Massachusetts’ nonprofit conservation organizations, conservation-related state agencies and municipal staff and boards increase their effectiveness by attracting new people to conservation as well as distributing information, news, opinions, experiences, and social capital to strengthen their teams. PCI believes in and encourages partnering, sharing, and a holistic approach to conservation that strives for inclusiveness, equity, and increased community involvement.
In 2009 PCI expanded its work with several partners to help catalyze a network of urban park advocates in Massachusetts so that more people in the state are connected and energized to stand up for their urban parks. This is PCI’s vision of success:
1. Every city resident in Massachusetts is within a 5-minute walk of a safe and appealing urban park.
2. All urban parks in Massachusetts are achieving their full potential as community assets.
3. Federal, state, and municipal governments budget for urban park acquisition, maintenance, and capital improvements and private resources are leveraged.
4. People who use and care about urban parks are linked with peers in their neighborhoods and cities and interact with their elected officials at City Hall and on Beacon Hill.
Based at The Trustees' gold-rated "green" building, the Doyle Conservation Center in Leominster, MA, PCI:
- sponsors and co-sponsors in-person training and networking events;
- directs the annual Massachusetts Land Conservation Conference
- administers the Massachusetts Land Trust Acceleration Program; and
- manages ConservationCommon.org and UrbanParkAdvocates.org.
